The Benefits of a Systems Engineering Approach



Today’s medical devices are redefining the standard of care by improving medical outcomes and the patient experience. These improvements are driven by technical innovations that span multiple engineering disciplines, interface to medical disposables, connect to patients, and support IoT-driven functionality. The demands associated with developing disruptive new technologies, complex architectures, ergonomic and intuitive user interfaces, and multi-dimensional development programs must be balanced with key business objectives. Utilizing a holistic Systems Engineering approach is critical to the development of commercially viable products. The System Engineer provides the glue that binds the individual engineering disciplines and specialty groups together enabling development projects to systematically progress from conceptualization to engineering development, to commercialization in an optimized manner.

Phil PalmerPhillip Palmer, Ph.D. & PMP - Program Manager:

Phil Palmer has been developing medical devices and analytical laboratory instrumentation for over 20 years. He has experience leading multi-functional development teams through the entire product development lifecycle from proof-of-concept through to transition to manufacture. Phil’s technical capabilities include systems engineering, optics and imaging, lasers (diode, solid-state, gas, dye), embedded software, precision motion systems, and thermal management. He has developed aesthetic laser systems, photo-therapeutic and photo-aesthetic devices, a point-of-care IVD digital fluorescence imaging system, blood processing systems, and a series of automated high-temperature Hi-Res thermogravimetric analyzers. Phil holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Ursinus College and obtained his doctoral degree in Chemical Physics from the University of Pennsylvania.
