20th Annual Conference: 13 April 2016 in Boston

This year’s MassMEDIC Annual Conferences was held in conjunction with the BIOMEDevice (MD&M Boston) show at the Boston Expo Center and focused on the “Digital Health”

After an overview of the services UMass’s Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS) has to offer local researchers, IBM’s Watson Health stole the show.  “The future of health is cognitive” said Deborah DiSanzo, now GM of Watson Health.  Watson is trained by reading text, and has been studying up on lot’s of medical health topics as well as EHRs to aid doctors in decision making.  There is now or soon will be too much data generated per patient for doctors to fully digest without the help of a tool like Watson says DiSanzo.

Leaders from Harvard Pilgrim and Tufts Medical spoke of the challenges facing payers and the move toward incentivizing outcomes and sharing cost savings with Doctors as well as Medical Device Manufacturers.  Abiomed’s CEO Michael Minogue told the assembled crowd that his sales force is now incentivised for Outcomes.  CMS’ move toward bundling payments for establish procedures like “Total Knee” was also discussed.
